Masataka Taketsuru is the founder of Nikka Whisky and is also described as the 'father of Japanese whisky'. In 1918, he traveled to Scotland to closely observe and learn how whisky is made. In 1934, he founded Nikka Whisky. Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. Ltd. owns two working distilleries in Japan - the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries.

Yoichi distillery lies in southern Hokkaido and has three sides surrounded by mountains, a terrain similar to the one found in Scotland. Yoichi possesses its own cooperage and they are particularly careful when selecting the barrels. Yoichi produces Whisky in the Highland style.

Miyagikyo distillery is located in the foothills of the Miyagi prefecture near the town of Sendai. Built in 1969 it was the second distillery built by Nikka, following the Yoichi Distillery in Hokaido. The high humidity and purity of air is almost the same as in Cairngorms region in the heart of Scotland. Only the cherry trees are a reminder that the location is in the heart of Japan and not the Highlands. The Miyagikyo distillery is using the old coffey still which dates back to the 19th century. A true blend of futurism and tradition.

The softer nature of the Miyagikyo’s Whiskies complements the big, smoky Spirits of Yoichi beautifully.

This Super Nikka blend contains a high proportion of malt from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. A subtle harmony of fruits, with light peat and sherry cask notes.
