Scapa - The Orcadian Glansa

A gentle introduction to the world of peated whisky

Scapa Distillery is found on the fiery coastal shores of the mainland of the Isle of Orkney. There are only two distilleries in the island of Orkney, the farest north of Scotland. One is Highland Park, famous for its viking culture, and the other one is Scapa, a very gentle whisky.

The Scapa distillery was build in 1885 and nowadays produces roughly 1 million liters of Whiskey each year. Scapa's warehouses stand at the edge of the sea, its collection of exclusively ex-Bourbon casks weathering the maritime climate as they age.

They whiskies have 'proper peating', meaning that the water from the distillery flows from a peat bog, but the malted grain is not dried over peat, so there is a hint of natural peat in the glass without the smoke.

Scapa is surprisingly approachable for an island malt. Silky and full-bodied, marmalade and honeyed oak dance with a light, weaving smoke to create a delightful play of feeling and flavor.
