The liqueur comes in three proofs: the original 70, a new "whiskey-forward" 80, and a robust 100 proof version. Despite these changes, Southern Comfort has retained its characteristic taste, with the original offering a sweet, fruity, and slightly spicy flavor profile that's accessible to a wide range of drinkers​.

The aroma of Southern Comfort is unique, often described as a blend of vanilla, lemon, oranges, and cinnamon, while the palate may remind one of cherries, vanilla, simple syrup, and cloves.
